Greg Cothron

Greg Cothron serves as the Deputy General Counsel for the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury. He provides legal guidance to the Office’s 13 divisions, with a focus on the divisions of State Audit and Local Government Audit. He is also responsible for drafting, reviewing, and tracking legislation of interest to the Comptroller’s Office.

Greg began his career with the Comptroller’s Office in 1998 as a Staff Attorney in the division of State Audit. In 2012, he became an Assistant General Counsel within the newly established Office of General Counsel and was named Deputy General Counsel in February 2022.

Greg earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University and his Juris Doctor degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. He is also a 2022 graduate of the Tennessee Government Executive Institute.

Since 2014, Greg has served as the Comptroller’s designee on the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board, which oversees and supports the state’s 911 system. He also regularly conducts presentations on audit-related legal issues and legislative updates for Comptroller staff and other state and local government agency representatives.

In his spare time, Greg enjoys playing golf and kayaking. He is also a big soccer fan and a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur and Nashville SC. He and his wife are proud parents of two children.
