Greg Cothron is the Deputy General Counsel for the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office. He provides legal guidance to the Office’s 12 divisions, with an emphasis on the divisions of State Audit and Local Government Audit. He is also responsible for drafting, reviewing, and tracking legislation that is of interest to the Comptroller’s Office.   

Greg began his career with the Comptroller’s Office in 1998 as a Staff Attorney in the division of State Audit. In 2012, he became an Assistant General Counsel within the newly established Office of General Counsel. He was named Deputy General Counsel in February 2022.

Greg is a graduate of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He then received his Juris Doctor degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

Since 2014, Greg has served as the Comptroller’s designee on the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board. He also regularly provides training on legal issues to the Comptroller’s Department of Audit and other state government auditors.

Greg and his wife are the parents of two children. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and kayaking. Greg is also a big soccer fan and cheers for Tottenham Hotspur and Nashville SC.
