Kathy J. Stickel, CPA, CGFM is the Director of State Audit for the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury. State Audit is responsible for conducting financial and performance audits of all state departments, agencies, and institutions. Kathy oversees all of the audit groups within the division including State Agency Audits, Information Systems Audit, and the Medicaid/TennCare Audit team. 

Kathy began her career with the Comptroller’s Office in 1995 as an auditor in the division of State Audit. In 2008, she was promoted to Assistant Director in State Audit. In 2012, Kathy transferred to Comptroller’s Office of Management Services as an Assistant Director. She became the Director of OMS in 2016 and was named Director of State Audit in 2020.

Kathy is a graduate of Murray State University and the University of Kentucky where she received a Masters of Accountancy. She is also a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Government Financial Manager. Kathy is a member of the Tennessee Government Executive Institute Class of 2006, is a former Nashville chapter president of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA), and served on AGA’s National Financial Management Standards Board and the Finance and Budget Committee. Most notably, she was AGA’s National Treasurer from 2020-2021.

In 2019, Kathy received a certificate of completion for the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. In 2022, she was recognized with the William R. Snodgrass Distinguished Leadership Award from AGA.

Kathy is married with two children, two stepdaughters, and a house full of pets. She enjoys the outdoors as demonstrated by her love of traveling, hiking, and fitness activities.
