Millington Police Lieutenant Indicted After Double Dipping on Work Hours
An investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has resulted in the indictment of Millington Police Department Lieutenant Bryan Childress after investigators determined he received $2,971.89 in unearned wages and benefits by claiming to work for the police department while also working private security jobs.
The investigation began after a Millington city official reported questionable time reporting practices involving Childress.
Investigators compared Childress' department timesheets from January 2023 through December 2025 with records from Protos Off Duty Services (ODS), a company that coordinates off duty security work for law enforcement officers, and found that Childress reported working for both employers during the same hours on 59 different days. The overlapping time totaled 66 hours.
Childress acknowledged that he worked off duty security jobs through ODS and several other companies. He also admitted that he never obtained the required approval for his outside employment and understood that ODS assignments were to be worked only while he was off duty from the police department.
On December 1, 2025, Childress was placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the Comptroller's investigation.
Based upon this investigation, in August 2026, the Shelby County Grand Jury indicted Bryan Childress on one count of theft of property over $2,500, and one count of official misconduct.
“Public employees are expected to accurately report the hours they work and follow policies governing outside employment,” said Comptroller Mumpower. “Departments should have procedures in place to verify employee time and ensure outside employment does not conflict with official duties.”
